Walk and Talk celebrates 15 years

by isleofman.com 22nd September 2014
A celebration will take place early next month to mark 15 years of Walk and Talk.
The initiative was started in 1999, when a small group of walkers held the first ever session at the National Sports Centre.
Today, the concept remains the same - providing gentle exercise for those recovering from illness, improving fitness, seeing progress and having fun, all whilst socialising.
More than 300 now take part on a weekly basis . . and over the years some 225,000 miles have been covered.
After the success of Walk and Talk at the NSC in Douglas, more sessions were introduced in Peel in 2004, Ramsey in 2005 and Castletown in 2006.
All routes are flat with a circuit no longer than a mile, and walkers are issued with cards allowing them to track their mileage.
Over 30 walkers have now completed more than 2,000 miles, with some having done twice that.
On October 5 there will be a one-off walk over 3km on Douglas Promenade, with walkers setting off from the War Memorial at 10am and heading to the tram terminus end of the prom before returning.
All are welcome and those taking part will receive a special Walk and Talk certificate.
