Isle of Man Post Office Sponsorship Committee has provided its support to the Peel Elim Community Church in its mission to help Syrian Refugees in Jordan.
 
The Committee were approached by Bernie Harding who has played a pivotal role in initiating the Island’s involvement and it unanimously agreed to distribute two twenty kilo boxes full of blankets and clothing items to a town called Hoor in Sweden, from where they were then forwarded to Jordan.
 
As at February 2014 the United Nations had registered almost 600,000 refugees in Jordan, approximately 80 percent of Syrian Refugees live in urban areas of North Jordan while 20 percent are living in three main camps: Za’atari, Marjeeb al-Fahood, and Cyber City.
 
Bernie Harding said: "We just want to say a massive thank you to Isle of Man Post Office for supporting us in this appeal. It made it possible for us to make a huge difference to a place in the world where there is currently great need."
 
Sarah Read, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Sponsorship Committee said: "When we were approached by Bernie and told of the great work herself and the church wanted to carry out in aid of the Syrian Refugees we had no hesitation in agreeing this, this is a very worthy cause and although our contribution may only be of a small assistance we wanted to do what we could to help. The Sponsorship Committee aims to support a variety of local initiatives throughout the year and is always keen to hear from individuals and organisations looking for support which it may be able to help with.”
