Prison walk raises ?2,092 for Rebecca House

by isleofman.com 26th September 2014

A group of prison staff and inmates have raised more than ?2,000 for Rebecca House Children’s Hospice.

The party undertook a sponsored walk from Jurby Prison to the old Victoria Road prison site in Douglas in June, covering nearly 20 miles and ascents of more than 2,500 feet.

Eight prison staff and eight inmates completed the challenge, which was co-ordinated and led by Senior Officer PEI Mike Pacey.

SO Pacey, together with Deputy Prison Governor Nigel Fisher, recently presented a cheque for ?2,092 to Mary Doyle and Terri Cook of Hospice Isle of Man.

Mary, PR and Marketing Manager for Hospice and Rebecca House, said: ‘We were absolutely delighted that 16 staff and prisoners took on the challenge of walking 20 miles from Jurby to Douglas to raise funds for the children and families who attend Rebecca House. I would also like to thank everyone who sponsored the walkers and helped raise the amazing amount of ?2,092 for our charity, and especially Mike Pacey for organising this event.’

The prison staff gave up their free time to take part in the charity challenge, which followed a mainly cross-country route.

Mike Pacey said: ‘Rebecca House Children’s Hospice is a wonderful facility that looks after children in the Isle of Man facing a life-limiting or life-threatening illness. I’d like to add my thanks to everyone who took part and to those who provided support on the day. It is always good to see prisoners making a positive contribution to the local community through their charitable endeavours.’
