Deadline approaches for Blackpool Airport sale

by isleofman.com 1st October 2014

Island based Citywing says it's optimistic a buyer can be found for Blackpool Airport to keep the facility open.
Airport bosses today announced they would close the loss-making site on 15 October, unless agreement can be reached with a purchaser in just over a week's time, by the 7 October.
Ticket seller Citywing, which operates up to three flights a day to Blackpool, says it is working with the airport to find an interim solution so operations can continue.
The airport's owners Balfour Beatty which bought the site in 2008, put it up for sale at the end of August this year, to end the firm's involvement in regional airports.
The company says unless a new buyer is found to ensure the viability of the airport operation, it will cease operations on 16 October.
Isle of Man campaign group TravelWatch has referred to "the likely closure of Blackpool airport .. (as) bad news for the Island."
The group says it notes parties are working towards an interim position for continued operations but says the uncertainty is "most unhelpful".
Last year nearly 19,000 passengers used the route - which first operated in 1927 - making it CityWing’s second most important route after Belfast.
