The Africa story comes to the Island

by isleofman.com 2nd October 2014

One of Africa’s leading economists is coming to the Isle of Man this month. In what will be a rare opportunity to hear from Standard Bank’s Chief Economist and Head of Research, Goolam Ballim.

The event on October 20th is being hosted by Ian Hamilton, Standard Bank’s Head of Corporate and Business Banking in the Isle of Man.

Africa is the world’s fastest growing region. It has immense potential, but also offers great challenges. The seminar will address what is driving the growth and how we can unlock the opportunities.

Standard Bank is Africa’s largest bank. It is focused on sub-Saharan Africa which saw average GDP growth of 5.6% in 2013, ahead of the US, Europe and many other developing economies.  Ian Hamilton said the seminar will be the chance to catch up with latest research: ‘Earlier this year Goolam was speaking in Washington at the US Africa Summit, attended by President Barack Obama, and he’s often quoted in the world’s top financial press. We’re lucky that he’s coming to the Isle of Man to share his and his team’s latest insights into the world’s economies.’

Goolam heads up a team of 53 who analyse the world’s economies, but most particularly the dynamic but diverse continent of Africa. The IoM has recognised the potential to do business in and with Africa where a demographic and technological revolution is taking place but Goolam will also be looking at the competition, the risks, the regulatory environment and the challenges facing the continent.
