Douglas East by-election cost revealed

by isleofman.com 6th October 2014
The Douglas East By-Election trial cost the taxpayer ?1.37 million pounds.
The final figures for the trial - in which Crosby man Charles Lewin admitted three counts of election fraud and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison - have been made public by Treasury Minister Eddie Teare.
Mr Teare says a significant element of the costs relate to the engaging of UK counsel, and after speaking to the Attorney General's office about why this was necessary, he would now like to review of how and under what circumstances UK Counsel and QCs are appointed.
Mr Teare adds that he does not believe the current civil legal aid arrangements strike the right balance between justice and cost, and consideration needs to be given on how this burden on the taxpayer could be reduced.
Whilst admitting Treasury is acting purely as a conduit in presenting the information Mr Teare says the Legal Aid Committee has launched a consultation to review how legal representation is provided to those without the means to pay for it.
He says he looks forward to reviewing the outcome of what he refers to as "this important piece of work".
