Island of Culture trumpets youth ambassador’s return

by isleofman.com 7th October 2014

Island of Culture youth ambassador Jason Evans returns to the Island this month to give a concert and brass masterclass.

The Manx-born principal trumpet with the London Philharmonia Orchestra will be performing with quintet Inner City Brass on Saturday October 25th in Peel Cathedral and on Sunday October 26th giving a brass masterclass at St Ninian’s Lower School.

22-year-old Jason is the youngest principal trumpeter of a London orchestra. Earlier this year he was appointed the Royal Academy of Music’s James Watson Associate Professor of Trumpet, only weeks after completing his Bachelor’s degree at the Academy with first class honours and being presented with the Queen’s Commendation Award for Outstanding Studentship.

Island of Culture events director Michael Lees said: ‘Jason is enjoying outstanding success and has recently been touring in South America and Europe, so I am delighted that he has found time in his packed schedule to return home, perform for us in this special concert and share his exceptional talent by holding a masterclass.

‘Jason and his fellow youth cultural ambassadors Lloyd Mayor and Davy Knowles have been tremendously supportive of our year of cultural celebrations. They have done much to “fly the flag” for the Island far beyond these shores and show to the world the Isle of Man is home to some truly outstanding artistic talent.’

The programme for the Peel Cathedral concert will feature Gareth Wood - Quintet for Brass; Overture; Julian Malone – Revolutions; Michael Kamen – Quintet; J. S. Bach arr. A Miller - Fugue in D Minor and Malcolm Arnold – Quintet; trad arr. Gillis - Just a Closer Walk; Bernstein arr. Gale - West Side Story;  Oystein Baadsvik – Fnugg and Kander/Ebb arr. Davies - The Chicago Suite .

Tickets for the concert are available online at villagaiety.com, in person from the Welcome Centre or call 600555.

The masterclass, which will take the form of an introductory session to brass instruments and include some coaching, will finish at 1pm and be followed by a short concert for participants. Places are limited. For more information and to book contact Emma Quirk, emma.quirk@gov.im
