Govt monitoring airport closure

by isleofman.com 8th October 2014

The Department of Infrastructure says it is in close communication with Citywing over the threatened closure of Blackpool Airport.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne says the airline was given 'very little notice' of the closure, which will take effect from October 15 after no buyer could be found for the airport.

Mr Gawne said: 'The Isle of Man/Blackpool route has averaged around 40,000 passengers in 2012 and 2013 combined and this will be a blow to those who regularly use the reliable, convenient and low fare service.

‘This is very sad news. Blackpool Airport is an airport steeped in aviation history, with long ties with the Isle of Man. I sincerely hope that Citywing’s ongoing discussions with Blackpool Airport prove worthwhile or alternatively that a solution involving a nearby airfield can be found.’
