Open Day at Douglas Fire Station raised over ?2,000

by isleofman.com 9th October 2014
Douglas Fire Station opened its doors to the public in July, to put on a fun day out for the local community, whilst raising money for charity.

The day was a great success, with people coming from all around the Island to view the exciting demonstrations, have a go on the fun rides and show their support for the Fire and Rescue service.

Families were able to dress up as Firefighters, ride a fire engine, take part in the Hose Run Challenge, travel down a zip wire and much more. Exciting demonstrations were also scheduled throughout the day, seeing people rescued from the stations training tower and Road Traffic Collision extractions.

Chief Fire Officer Kevin Groom said:

“The Open Day proved once again to be a huge success; I would like to thank the community of the Isle of Man for their support. The planning of the event and the efforts by everyone on the day portrayed my Service as both unique and professional. The Service continually provides a vital role to contribute to the safety of everyone who lives, works and visits our Island”

?2,043.79 was raised for Rebecca House, the children’s wing of Hospice Isle of Man that provides a safe haven and end of life care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.

Mary Doyle, Marketing and PR Manager for Hospice said:

“We are very grateful to everyone that attended the lovely fun day and for raising this amazing amount of money.” “Our children’s hospice looks after 30 children and their families on the island so this donation will allow us to continue this support; thank you to everyone involved.”

The day was not possible without the hard work and dedication from local firefighters and their families, who gave up their time to help make the day such a success.
