Rates need change - so do local authorities

A man who sparked an investigation into the Island’s rates says he’s hopeful the system will now be reformed.

A report on David Buttery’s petition for redress of grievance, which calls for rates to be scrapped in favour of something fairer, will be presented to Tynwald later this month.

Mr Buttery says he’s glad the petition has forced a debate into how the rateable value system works, but doubts major change is on the way any time soon.

And he says although he agrees with the committee that scrapping rates wouldn’t depend on local authority reform, that too will need to change:
