There have been reports of several cases and small outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by Norovirus.
Norovirus, previously known as Winter Vomiting Virus, is a well-known cause of diarrhoea and vomiting. The virus is highly infectious and can spread rapidly in residential homes, schools and hospitals.
The symptoms are the sudden onset of vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea; some people, especially children, may have a fever. Not all patients develop all the symptoms. In the majority of cases the symptoms resolve in 1 – 2 days; however those affected continue to shed the virus for 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped.
Advice to the public:
• If you or someone in your household develops vomiting and diarrhoea, the most likely reason is Norovirus.
• If you have vomiting and diarrhoea please do not visit the Emergency Department at Noble’s Hospital, the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital or the out of hours GP service MEDS; if you require medical advice, contact your GP / MEDS by telephone and attend only if advised to do so.
• Do not visit the people in hospitals or care homes as Norovirus spreads rapidly in such settings.
• Practice scrupulous hygiene, especially washing hands, cleaning surfaces and the toilet bowl etc.
• Follow the 48 hour rule: Anyone with Norovirus is infectious for a period of up to 48 hours after all symptoms have resolved.
Do not send children to school during this period or visit hospitals or care homes.
There is no specific treatment for Norovirus. The symptoms resolve spontaneously in 1 – 2 days.
