Redundancy pay rights could see rebate scheme scrapped

by isleofman.com 18th October 2014
A redundancy rebate system for small firms on the Island could be abolished, if new anti-discrimination laws come into force.
A draft Equality Bill bans discrimination in the workplace on grounds including age, sex, gender, race and religion.
The proposals give those aged 65 and over the right to redundancy pay for the first time.
But government may scrap its rebate scheme designed to ease pressure on small firms.
At present, those with fewer than 40 employees can claim back up to 60 per cent of payments made to redundant workers.
Employment specialist at Island law firm Appleby Caren Pegg says that will be a blow for struggling small firms: (play audio)
Employers can download the new consultation on redundancy payments at: gov.im/consultation detail.gov
That's where you can also find the main Equality Bill document.
Both consultations close on friday 14 November. Clip 1
