Police issue warning over phone scams

by isleofman.com 20th October 2014

The Police have received reports of a phone scam method which involves persons being telephoned at home, with the caller purporting to be an employee of Microsoft Windows. They go on to state that Microsoft systems show that the person’s home computers are showing as “running slow” on Microsoft Servers because they are being hacked by “someone”. Callers are then duped into providing log-on details to their home computers, which could put their personal information at risk. “Hackers” could use this information to remotely hack into personal computers.

Members of the public are reminded that they should never give out any personal information to someone that they do not know personally, or completely trust. Remember that not even your own Bank will contact you asking for personal information such as passwords or logon information.

If you are in doubt, speak to a family member or to the Police for advice before passing out any personal information.
