Development Brief published for former prison site

by isleofman.com 21st October 2014
A vision for the future of the Victoria Road prison site in Douglas has been published.
The brief, put together by the Department of Infrastructure, gives potential developers guidance over planning, pending the preparation of the area plan for the East.
Suitable uses which will be encouraged include residential developments, which may incorporate affordable housing, sheltered accommodation or day care facilities.
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK says their intention is to support redevelopment that will best serve the needs of the local community while reflecting Government’s national priorities.
He says potential developers will have to demonstrate a high quality design that will contribute positively to the prominent site.
The brief takes into account feedback received during a six-week public consultation undertaken earlier this year.
68 responses were received, featuring a range of opinions on how best to use the site, which faces on to Victoria Road, Victoria Avenue and Poplar Terrace.
The land has been vacant since 2013 when the old Victoria Road prison, which operated from April 1891 to August 2008, was demolished and the two-acre site cleared for redevelopment.
The Development Brief can be found on the government's website in the planning and building section.
