King William’s College Invites 2014 Sixth Form Scholarship Applications

by isleofman.com 22nd October 2014

King William’s College has opened invitations for its annual Sixth Form Scholarship examinations, which is open to all school pupils due to enter lower sixth, or Year 12, in September 2015. Academic Scholarships, as well as Music, Drama and Sports Awards are available.

This year’s examinations are to be held on Saturday 15th November, with the deadline for applications on Friday 7th November. Examinations consist of papers in English and Mathematics, as well as one other subject chosen by the candidate. This would normally be a subject the candidate expects to study at Higher Level as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Candidates for the Music and Drama awards will be required to undergo a practical assessment. Candidates for the Sports Awards will be expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in two of the major sports played at the College.

All candidates are also required to attend an interview and should normally be under 17 years of age on the 1st September of the year of entry.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma has never been as popular with UK schools as it is at the moment.  Not only is it a broad and rigorous education for the final two years of secondary school (from the age of 16 to 18) but it is highly regarded by universities around the world and the top universities in both the UK and US actively recruit IB students.  The number of UK schools offering the IB has increased 5-fold in the past 10 years and, apart from the US, the UK now has more IB schools than any other country.

Joss Buchanan, Vice-Principal at King William’s College, stated: “Possibly the greatest benefit of the IB is that it allows an element of flexibility in terms of both available subjects and the manner in which they are taught. Participation in the IB is open to all, and equips students with experiences, skills and qualifications which are broad, portable and will open doors to the truly global commercial environment which awaits them. We have increasingly witnessed the top UK universities actively recruiting IB students.”
