A public meeting has been organised to debate whether MHKs should continue to elect their Chief Minister.
Backbencher Alf Cannan will go head to head with Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson at a debate organised by the Positive Action Group. Mr Cannan will be arguing for election by the people and Mr Watterson against.
A PAG spokesman said: 'Following the presentations the audience will have chance to comment and question the protagonists. As usual the public meeting is open to all and admission is free - the audience will not be a randomly selected group!'
The meeting is at the Manx Legion Club in Market Hill, Douglas, at 7.30pm on Monday.
The spokesman said: 'Every five years, after the General Election, only Tynwald members are given the privilege of electing the person who will serve the nation as Chief Minister. For newly elected MHKs this is the first important decision they collectively will have to make. The public has no part to play in the process. Even in the the build up to the General Election no one knows who the candidates for Chief Minister will be.
'By the time of the next election, in September 2016, the Ministerial system will be 30 years old. The method of electing a Chief Minister has remained the same. PAG believes it is time to examine this process. Is it reflective of the expectations of a modern democratic society?'
