Should the people elect the chief minister?

by isleofman.com 28th October 2014
More than 80 people attended the latest meeting of the Positive Action Group last night to hear arguments for and against the public election of the chief minister.

Michael MHK Alf Cannan put forward the case for public election, saying it would mean more democracy and more scrutiny.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson disagreed, saying the popular choice might not be able to command parliamentary authority.

He believes the current system could be tweaked to make it more favourable; he suggested chief minister candidates go out to public hustings after the general election and the relaxation of collective responsibility.

Here are the thoughts of some of the people at last night's meeting. Clip 1
