Retail will suffer, survey says

by isleofman.com 4th November 2014

Most of those who took part in a consultation on public transport and car parking say charging for parking in town centres would be detrimental.

Almost 1,300 respondents - 81 per cent - said they believed charging would have a damaging impact on retail areas.

A report on the public consultation is available to view on the government website.

Nearly 80 per cent of respondents said they did not think that charging for parking would encourage people to walk, cycle or take a bus to the shops.

The consultation received 1,589 responses on questions relating to car parking and 1,711 responses on public transport proposals. Respondents said the government should continue to provide school bus services, with the report highlighting that 'a significant amount of support' exists for a 50p fare.
