Prisoner rehabilitation relies on solid relationships, says charity trustee

by isleofman.com 4th November 2014
Without solid relationships, a convicted criminal will have less chance of a crime-free life when they leave prison.
That’s the view of Marcia Brabbs, a group leader and trustee of PrisonWorks Isle of Man.
The charity provides much of the rehabilitation in the Island’s prison, from restorative justice and mentoring programmes, to education for inmates.
In October, in was announced an independent inquiry into the early release of Donovan Kitching from Jurby prison was to be established.
Kitching, only weeks out of prison, caused the death by dangerous driving of 62-year-old Hampshire woman Gwen Valentine.
Following his sentencing, Ms Valentine’s family said they wanted rehabilitation at the prison to be reviewed.
Ms Brabbs says relationships have a lot to do with preventing reoffending:Clip 1
