DEFA update on king scallop fishing season

by isleofman.com 12th November 2014
Following the delay to the start of the king scallop fishing season off the west coast of the Island, due to higher than normal levels of the naturally occurring domoic acid, DEFA can advise that levels of the substance have fallen to satisfactory levels within two of the areas Bradda (IS14) and Chickens (IS21)) and fishing will reopen from 0001 hours on 11 November 2014.

Shucking orders apply in these two areas, meaning that fish processors must ensure only the edible parts of the scallops are marketed. All local producers employ this process anyway.

The remaining area off Peel (IS9) remains closed for the time being and sampling of this area will continue on a regular basis.

DEFA reiterates that scallops are perfectly safe to eat. Fishing off the east coast was unaffected and started on schedule on 1st November. The season runs until 31st May.
