Awards to recognise the Island’s unsung community ‘superheroes’

by isleofman.com 12th November 2014

The Island’s everyday ‘superheroes’ will be honoured for their selfless achievements this Saturday (15th November) at the Manx Radio Heroes in the Community Awards 2014.

The superhero-themed event will acknowledge individuals who do extraordinary things for the local community and go above and beyond their duty.

All funds raised from the evening will go towards local charity Dream Catcher. Chairman Michael Lees said “The awards are about thanking those who really go that extra mile, whether they’re a business person who tirelessly gives their time to support the local area or a young person who has shown the courage of a lion.”

Finalists and their families have been invited to join members of the local business community at the black tie dinner and ceremony at Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club.

This will be the sixth time Manx Radio and the Dream Catcher charity have hosted the event and this year there were a record number of nominations. Michael added “All the nominations come from the public and we have been overwhelmed by the support. It’s wonderful to be able to sing the praises of all the finalists, as well as raise funds for our great charity. We’d like to thank all the sponsors who help to make it such a dazzling and emotional event every year.”

Caroline Cornish from Friends Provident International, which is sponsoring the event for the second year running, said she feels honoured to be involved again: “Not only does it recognise and award people who have achieved some fantastic things, but specifically targets those who have not recognised for themselves the amazing, selfless and often life-changing things that they do every day. I am very much looking forward to meeting this year’s nominees.”

There are a total of ten award categories, sponsored by companies from on and off-Island:

Heart of Gold – Celton Manx
Child of Courage – Maitland
Parent of the Year – WH Ireland
Teacher of the Year – Boston
Dedication to the Arts Under 18 – Statesman Rail
Dedication to the Arts Over 18 – KPMG
Dedication to Sports Under 18 – Baker Tilly Isle of Man
Dedication to Sports Over 18 –Quinn Legal
Dedication to the Community – Standard Bank

Last year, the evening raised more than ?12,000 for Dream Catcher. The charity uses these funds and other donations to pay for items such as equipment for disabled islanders and building material for other local charities. Recent ‘dreams’ have included a specially adapted tricycle for a young boy with mobility difficulties and iPads for the children’s ward at Noble’s Hospital.
