Open debate on means testing

by isleofman.com 12th November 2014

Backbench MHK Chris Thomas is encouraging the public to attend a meeting this Friday in Onchan.

It's the second such event to be held as an alternative to the government's invitation-only Big Debate meetings. The first was held in October and filled the Centenary Hall in Peel to capacity.

Mr Thomas said: 'There are always options, and choosing between them depends on who is involved in the choice and how the choice is presented. The resolutions and record of the meeting in Peel are testament of the rich discussion which took place there about Changing Government.

'In Onchan we hope to stimulate the discussion of how Manx public services are allocated and financed – recognising the importance of residence in the Island and contribution - particularly given changing UK pension and national insurance regimes and scarce public revenue. We will also be considering vulnerability and tax-capping for the very rich.'

The meeting starts at 7pm in Onchan Parish Hall and will be chaired by captain of the parish Peter Kelly. Speakers include MHKs Peter Karran and Chris Thomas and Onchan commissioner Rob Callister.

Mr Thomas said: 'Contributions from everyone are welcomed and encouraged.'
