Manx charity Junior Achievement has been awarded ?1,000 in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014.
Following votes from members of the public Junior Achievement has been awarded a grant from Lloyds Bank to enable it to continue its work, preparing young people for the world of work.
Junior Achievement delivers a range of workshops in schools. These workshops are supported by professionally developed materials which focus on three key areas: financial literacy, employability skills and entrepreneurship.
The charity recruits and trains volunteers from business and the wider community to work alongside teachers in the classroom. The volunteers run the workshops and use their own skills and experience to bring the materials to life.
Junior Achievement believes in the boundless potential of young people and their workshops ensure that every student can participate regardless of their academic ability. The volunteer will work with tutor groups rather than academic groups, meaning that a class will comprise students with a mixed range of abilities.
This provides students with a unique experience and students who don’t ordinarily engage with education often are the ones who benefit the most.
Each year the charity needs to raise ?300,000 to support 5,000 students and a team of 400 volunteers.
Sue Cook, chief executive of Junior Achievement, said: ‘We were delighted to be nominated by Vikki Bolton of Lloyds Bank, who is also a volunteer for Junior Achievement. The money will be used to recruit and train more volunteers to work in the Island’s schools to help increase students’ chances of getting a job or starting their own business.’
The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to 1,400 local good causes in 350 communities.
Nearly 1.5 million votes were cast for good causes across the country during the voting that took place between 2 September and 10 October. Over 700,000 people will be benefit either directly or indirectly from the good work the 1,400 good causes across the country will be able to deliver as a result of receiving a Community Fund 2014 award.
