Rent system needs change, says councillor

Douglas councillor David Ashford says tenants in the local authority’s homes are getting less for more after years of rent rises and maintenance cuts.

He’s now calling for the government to go back to the system of handing back a third of the town’s rents to spend on repairs and renovation.

Councillor Ashford says even after large rent rises, the council still isn’t getting more money from the government, putting vital maintenance at risk.

And he says changing the funding system back to the way it used to work would be fairer for tenants:Clip 1
