More opportunities to take part in the Big Debate

by isleofman.com 18th November 2014
There will be two further opportunities next month for the public to take part in the Big Debate, the Minister for Policy and Reform announced today.

The national conversation continues with two meetings in December, at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre in Douglas and at Queen Elizabeth II High School in Peel.  These meetings will be open to all with seating and individual remote voting handsets being allocated on a first come, first served basis.  At both venues the doors will open to the public at 7pm, the event will start at 7:30pm prompt.

Dates and venues:
Tuesday 2 December 2014           Manx Museum Lecture Theatre, Douglas
Thursday 4 December 2014         QEII High School Assembly Hall, Peel

The presentation aims to engage the public in discussion about how the Government can adapt in order to face the opportunities and challenges ahead and be fit for the future.

There are three core themes:

•         Reduce the size and cost of Government and increase efficiency;
•         Modernise our welfare system;
•         Make Government more responsive to the needs of the community, families and individuals.

The first round of meetings in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel and Port Erin were well attended, with the public discussing a wide range of topics with Minister Robertshaw and Minister Teare.  The use of the handheld remote voting system was hailed a success by both the audiences and the Ministers.

Minister for Policy and Reform, Chris Robertshaw MHK said: “Everyone is invited to take part in our national conversation.  We have not attempted anything like this before and the engagement of the audiences so far has been useful and encouraging.  The Island is facing some very big challenges for which we need to find our own solutions.  These challenges and solutions are about our Island’s long term future for the next generation.

“Whilst I respect that there are a wide range of specific topics very close to individuals’ hearts, we need to look together at the wider key opportunities and challenges that exist to build a Government and an Island that is fit for the future.  I look forward to continuing our national conversation with you in December.”
