Dietary supplement recalled

by isleofman.com 27th November 2014
The Island's Food Safety Unit is highlighting a product recall involving a dietary supplement.
The product, "ABC Dophilius powder" made by Solgar UK has been found to contain a fungus.
The powder is marketed as "a blend of friendly bacteria" formulated as a dietary supplement for infants and children. It's mixed with infant formula, milk, juice or water, or is sprinkled on food.
The fungus can cause a rare infection - mucormycosis - which can cause infections in vulnerable groups such as premature infants, infants, children and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Food Safety Manager Ivan Bratty says people who have bought the supplement should check to see if the packaging has a ‘best before end date’ of July 2015. If so, you should return it to the retailer for a full refund.
Mr Bratty adds that the advice is in line with UK recommendations and all other Solgar UK products and other batches of ABC powder are not known to be affected.
Anyone with concerns or who may have consumed the recalled product, should contact their GP in the first instance.
