A company in the south of the Island has applied for planning permission to quarry limestone in Castletown.

The plans would see Pooil Vash Quarry producing up to 3,500 tonnes of black limestone a year for up to 30 years.

In its application, the company says it would take measures to protect Scarlett Peninsula's Area of Special Scientific Interest and Close ny Chollagh ancient monument – both of which are next door to the site.

And once quarrying work is finished, the firm says the site would be restored.

According to the company, material has been quarried at Pooil Vash for more than 650 years – and its distinctive stone can be found in St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

But because the limestone is fragile, the firm says it wouldn’t be blasting at the quarry but instead removing the stone using diggers.

Operations would be carried out between 8am and 4.30pm on weekdays and would see one truck a day carrying up to 19 tonnes of stone from the site.
