Questions over Post Office decision

by isleofman.com 2nd December 2014

Nine questions have been tabled for today's sitting of the House of Keys over the controversial decision to close the main Douglas and Ramsey Post Offices.

Instead, services will be transferred to nearby Spar shops owned by Heron & Brearley subsidiary Mannin Retail.

Onchan MHK Peter Karran will ask both the Chief Minister and Treasury Minister whether they had any direct involvement in the decision to employ a closed tender, and whether they had involvement before the decision was made to appoint Mannin Retail to operate two new sub-post offices. Allan Bell will be asked whether he was informed by the chairman of the Post Office of the proposal to employ a closed tender.

Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft will quiz Post Office chairman Graham Cregeen MHK over when financial difficulties were identified and what initiatives were considered.

She wants to know whether counter staff were involved in identifying potential cost savings, how the losses at Douglas and Ramsey were calculated and who will be paying for the remodeling of the Spar shops. Mrs Beecroft and Mr Karran will also ask Mr Cregeen about the tender process, with Mr Karran asking to what extent political considerations drove the decision and how the board voted.
