Loss of Ellan Vannin marked 105 years on

by isleofman.com 3rd December 2014
Ramsey hosts a memorial service tonight (Wednesday) in honour of the 35 lives lost at sea on Ellan Vannin more than a century ago.
Twenty-one crew and 14 passengers perished when the steam ship foundered in heavy storms, en route to Liverpool from Ramsey.
Prayers will be said and wreaths laid at a ceremony in Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Maughold church on the promenade.
Before that, many of the congregation will attend the unveiling of a new statue in the town centre, with a strong sea-faring theme.
It is 105 years since the ill-fated ferry sank at the entrance to the River Mersey.
Ellan Vannin, the smallest of the Steam Packet fleet, left Ramsey in the early hours of December 3rd 1909, but a few hours later was engulfed in what's been described as one of the worst storms of the century.
There were no survivors.
A service of remembrance attnded by local commissioners, MHKs, Steam Packet representatives and local descendants of victims, will be held at 6.30 this evening.
Beforehand, a new piece of street art depicting a boy wearing lifeboatman's kit will be unveiled on Market Hill in Ramsey, as part of the town's regeneration scheme -two separate events reflecting a common theme of the perils of the sea.
