Parliamentary trips a waste of money?

North Douglas MHK John Houghton says he’s outraged by parliamentary trips to other countries that have cost the taxpayer around ?80,000 in the last three years.

In a question for written reply in the House of Keys this week, he quizzed Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan about off-Island travel with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

It emerged the trips to destinations ranging from Liverpool and Cardiff to the British Virgin Islands and New Zealand had cost taxpayers ?78,000 since 2011 – although the CPA had contributed around ?14,000 towards that total.

Mr Houghton says he can’t understand what the trips are for:
