Public sector tenants face five per cent rent rise

by isleofman.com 5th December 2014
Public sector housing rents are to rise by five per cent from next April.
The move was announced on Friday after the Council of Ministers approved proposals from the Department of Health and Social Care.
Minister Howard Quayle says the rise will help maintain, repair and renew public sector housing around the Island.
He says the cost of providing homes outstrips income from rents - and the rise will mean an average increase of less than ?4 per week for tenants.
Just over one-third of tenants have their rents subsidised by benefits - they will not be affected.
Mr Quayle says the rise may be above inflation - but is reasonable: (play audio)
Meanwhile, Onchan Commissioner Rob Callister has asked the board to lodge a protest against the rise.
He believes the views of many local authorities and tenants have been ignored, particularly as means testing has still not been introduced.Clip 1
