Primary school pupils had a ball trying their hand at hockey.
Eight eastern primaries took part in an inaugural tournament, held at the National Sports Centre, with Onchan Primary School’s ‘Rascals’ and Laxey Primary School emerging as winners.
The tournament was run by the Manx Hockey Association in partnership with Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) and clubs sent coaches into schools ahead of the event.
Hannah Pullen, Hockey Development Officer for MSR, said: ‘The Department of Education and Children’s Strategy for Sport outlines the need to increase levels of physical activity among the young and open up chances for children to get involved in community sport.
‘Events like this run throughout the year and link directly to these objectives.
‘The in-school sessions offered a fun playing environment and, for many, their first chance to play hockey,’ Hannah said. ‘In total, 120 girls and boys participated in the tournament, which was great for the event’s first year.
‘There were a number of close games, which created a great atmosphere.
‘Hopefully, participants will remain involved, either with hockey or other sports and this will unlock a love of sport for them.’
It’s hoped to stage similar hockey events in other regions in 2015, Hannah said.
She added: ‘Thanks to umpires from clubs, who volunteered, and also Charlotte Powell, Caitlin Dodd and Emily Middleton, who recently took part in England Hockey’s In2Hockey Leaders’ Award and who used their participation in this event to gain valuable experience.’
