Horse trams back on track

by isleofman.com 19th December 2014

A major refurbishment of Douglas promenade has been put back until at least autumn of 2015 - which means it will be business as usual for the horse tram service next year.

Phil Gawne put the brakes on the scheme when he became Infrastructure Minister. One of the proposals involved moving the horse tram tracks from the centre of the road to the seaward side of the promenade.

Mr Gawne said: 'Work to rejuvenate Douglas Promenade is a massive undertaking and it is important to assess all the options before
progressing. This represents an investment in the Isle of Man’s infrastructure for the next 50 years and we must get it right.

'We are looking at design proposals to take account of issues such as the horse trams, traffic flow, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and the provision of shared use areas. There was a huge response to the recent consultation and members of the public came up with some good ideas for us to consider.'
