Old age timebomb a misnomer, says U3A Chairman

by isleofman.com 22nd December 2014
The so called "age timebomb" is a misnomer.
That's according to the chairman of the Isle of Man University of the Third Age, Dr John Wardle.
The university encourages lifelong learning and development of new skills in later life.
Chief Minister Allan Bell recently issued his most serious warning about the scale of challenges ahead to fund benefits, pensions and healthcare on the Island, in the light of a rapidly ageing population.
But Dr Wardle says while he accepts there may well need to be adjustments to social security and national insurance systems, the concept of older people being a burden needs to be questioned.
And he says a 2010 UK report showed if you consider indirect tax payments and hidden benefits provided by over 65s, like providing childcare to allow younger family members to go out to work, the picture is very different:Clip 1
