Isle of Man seal pups poisoned by raw human sewage

by isleofman.com 5th January 2015
It’s been revealed a large number of seal pups living in Manx waters are dying from food poisoning.
Marine biologists based at Swansea University's College of Medicine believe the poisoning is caused by a campylobacter bacterial infection, caused by raw human sewage.

Large numbers of grey seals have been infected, showing symptoms consistent with gastroenteritis that are comparable to those displayed by humans.
Describing the finding as ‘striking’, Professor Samuel Sheppard – who works as part of the research team – says the disease potential for vulnerable wildlife species is unknown.
The Sea Mammal Research Unit says determining the causes of infection and disease in grey seal pups during the breeding season is critical to understanding the factors that affect the early health – and ultimately the survival rates.
