Handcuffed man jumps in harbour

by isleofman.com 5th January 2015

Two police officers have been praised for their bravery after jumping into Ramsey harbour to rescue a man they had just arrested.

Constables Saskia Baxter and Mark Kerruish both sustained minor injuries in the incident on Saturday. They had arrested and handcuffed a man who then escaped them and jumped into the harbour. Constable Baxter immediately followed him into the water and swam to rescue him, while Constable Kerruish jumped in with a lifebelt and rope.

Ramsey Sergeant Vinny Lund said: 'Without the bravery and quick thinking from both Officers involved in the rescue, the outcome may been very different. The man was out of his depth in the water. To help us with our enquiries, I would ask anyone who saw what happened or assisted officers to contact Ramsey Police station on 812234.'

The man has been subsequently treated by mental health services.
