Tickets available for event to raise money for Nepal school-building projects

by isleofman.com 6th January 2015

If you are looking to start 2015 with a more mindful approach to life, then tickets are now available for Mindfulness For Nepal, an event organised by the Pahar Trust and Mindfulness Teacher Mike Kewley, to raise funds for school-building projects in remote areas of Nepal.

The event which is being held at Nobles Park Pavilion on Saturday 24th of January 2015 includes a presentation on the life changing work currently underway by Trust Chairman Howard Green MBE, and an introduction to Mindfulness with Mike Kewley who will introduce two mindfulness exercises to bring attention, compassion and connection into our everyday lives. A vegetarian  lunch is provided and there will be a raffle with the chance to win a selection of prizes.

The Pahar Trust was formed on the Island in 1993 when Howard was the Head Teacher of Kirk Michael School and it has continued to grow in success with over one hundred projects built to date, including schools and health posts.

“We have provided over 14,000 students with high quality facilities as well as teacher training and resources”

Howard reported;

“And we also employ four former Queen's Gurkha Engineers who design and monitor the school construction work.”

“One of the most successful aspects has been the school friendship link. This is where schools in the UK and IOM form friendships with schools in Nepal. It is used to enhance the school curriculum and many UK based schools have visited their friendship schools in Nepal. The Nepalese communities have such love and respect for the Isle of Man and its people.”

Mindfulness Teacher Mike has been interested in teaming up with the Trust for some time and feels that the event offers the opportunity to help others as well as discovering ways to help ourselves.

“I spent some time in Nepal many years ago and have always had a love for the people, landscape and the culture. Howard was actually one of my primary school teachers and was always an inspiration to me. I'm really happy that we can join forces and teach people how to be less stressed and anxious, whilst raising money for this worthwhile cause.”

The practice of Mindfulness has become increasingly popular as governments, businesses and schools use its techniques to become more resilient to the ups and downs of life.

“Mindfulness is a simple and effective method of tuning into the experience you're actually having rather than the thoughts in your head” Mike explains, “Not only does it benefit mental and emotional health, but it can make you a happier, healthier person with a bigger picture of life. Its techniques are based upon those found in the Buddhist traditions, which is a great connection to the people and culture of Nepal.”

Tickets for this special event are ?20.00 and available from Noa Bakehouse or by contacting Mike at mike@myfreemind.im. All proceeds go towards the Pahar Trust.
