Approval sought for ?2 million from reserves for rates revamp

by isleofman.com 8th January 2015
Treasury Minister Eddie Teare will ask Tynwald members approve spending ?2 million from reserves to revamp the Island’s rates system.
It’s after a petition for redress of grievance from Douglas man David Buttery asking for the system to be changed.
Last October, a report from the committee which examined the issue was debated by the court.
This month, Mr Teare will tell the court the system would still be based on property values, but every property on the Island needs revaluing.
There’ll be a three-month public consultation lasting until March, before legislation is drafted and passed by December next year.
If all goes according to plan, the new system would be in place by April 1, 2017.
Mr Teare says the money is needed for property valuations, legislative drafting, systems renewal and project management.
