Date fixed for 2015 Tower of Refuge walk

by isleofman.com 21st January 2015
The 2015 Tower of Refuge walk will be on Sunday April 19th.

Tower Insurance has, again, agreed to sponsor the event, which is now in its fourth year. In 2014 the walk attracted around 3,400 participants and raised ?3000 for the RNLI.

As in previous years it is being organised by Douglas Development Partnership. Town centre manager Michelle O’Malley said: ‘The walk out to Conister Rock has become a fixture in the town’s calendar, thanks principally to Tower Insurance which has generously sponsored the event every year and to the general public who turn out in their thousands to take part.

‘This is a great community event that not only raises money for the RNLI, which, of course, has such a strong association with the tower, but also brings a boost to businesses in Douglas, especially bars, cafes and restaurants.

‘As well as the tremendous turnout and fantastic amount of money raised, last year’s event will be remembered as the occasion when a couple got engaged out at the tower. We can’t guarantee another “romance on the rock”, but we’re confident that, weather permitting, the walk will at least be a memorable affair.’

Tower Insurance managing director Peter Gallagher said: ‘The Tower of Refuge is a landmark symbolising security and protection, the cornerstones of our business, so we see supporting this event as a good fit with our corporate social responsibility programme and are pleased to be sponsoring the Tower of Refuge walk for the fourth year in succession.’

The Tower Insurance Tower of Refuge escorted walk is open to all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and instructions by the coastguards and stewards followed at all times.

Subject to weather and tidal conditions the walk is expected to begin in the early evening. For the latest news check out Douglas Town Centre Management’s Facebook page or contact Michelle O’Malley, MOMalley@douglas.gov.im, 696304.
