High winds leave Peggy unmoved

by isleofman.com 28th January 2015
The world's oldest yacht won't be moving for some time yet.
Archaeologists were planning to move the Peggy from the from the Nautical Museum in Castletown today in order to undergo urgent conservation work but the delicate operation has been postponed due to high winds across the Island.
The move will be the culmination of years of preparatory work to save what is thought to be the earliest surviving example of a British yacht which hasn't been moved in 200 years.
When it gets underway the conservation work is expected to take around five years to complete.
It's not currently known when an attempt will now be made to move the Peggy and get the work underway.
The postponement of the work means Bridge Street in Castletown will remain open to traffic today. It was to have been closed to allow a crane to carry out the delicate operation.
