Thirty-plus job losses at Mount Murray

by isleofman.com 29th January 2015

The Mount Murray Hotel will close next Friday, February 6. The building owned by Albert Gubay was devastated by fire 14 months ago.

Managing director David Lyons said: 'Given the protracted negotiations with the company’s insurers, lasting over a year, and the prospect of a further year at arbitration the company was forced to agree a settlement.

'A further nail in the coffin was increasing energy costs which proved crippling for the business.'

The leisure club will close along with the hotel but the golf club is not affected.

Hotel staff were told of the closure today. More than 30 people will lose their jobs.

In a statement, the company says:'Mount Murray Country Club Limited will work with the Staff and Government agencies to expedite the redundancy procedures and assist the staff in finding alternative employment.

'Arrangements are in train to refund gym memberships in accordance with their agreements. Anyone with wedding or function bookings will be contacted today to discuss alternative arrangements including in some cases transferring to the golf
club.'

The complex was developed by Albert Gubay some 20 years ago.
