Another LegCo reform attempt due in House of Keys

by isleofman.com 24th February 2015

The House of Keys sits later today – with another possible attempt to reform Legislative Council on the cards.

During today’s sitting, Onchan MHK Peter Karran will ask for leave to introduce a private member’s bill to make changes to Tynwald’s upper chamber.

Mr Karran says he wants to make it popularly elected, ban MLCs from becoming ministers, and adjust the eligibility of potential candidates.

There’s also a packed question paper, with seven queries for oral answer and another five for written reply.
Mr Karran will open questions today, asking what the government’s doing to protect people on lower incomes from paying more in fees and charges than they do in tax.
And Michael MHK Alf Cannan wants to know why the government’s response to criticisms from the UK’s Labour Party wasn’t stronger, with a press release to the media.
Two bills will be considered during this morning’s sitting: the Interpretation Bill 2014 and the Legislation Bill 2014 will both be steered through their clauses stage by Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson.
You can hear live coverage of Keys questions from 10 o’clock this morning on Manx Radio’s AM1368 frequency, online at manxradio.com or via our mobile apps.
