The Isle of Man’s manufacturing sector, supported by the Department of Economic Development, is encouraging local residents interested in a career in engineering to attend the 2015 Engineering and Manufacturing Careers event.
It is being held on Wednesday 11th March 2015 between Noon and 8pm at the new Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC), Peel Road, Douglas.
The event provides an opportunity to discuss career options with representatives from local manufacturers, the current and likely future vacancies available within it and to find out more about what companies within the sector manufacture.
The event also provides an opportunity to find out more information about the two-year Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering course, which has 36 places available for its September 2015 intake, treble the number of the 2013 intake.
The Department’s Political Member with responsibility for Manufacturing Leonard Singer MHK commented:
‘There is currently a strong demand for skilled engineers in the Isle of Man and this will continue well into the future given the sector’s continued overall growth and strong order books.
‘Within Europe, access to the right skills is the key issue within the precision manufacturing sector so much of our sector’s future success depends on having accessibility to skilled engineers. Therefore we need to develop a highly skilled local workforce to ensure its continued success.’
Chris Allen, Chair of the Manufacturing & Technical Industries Committee of the Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce said:
‘This year’s event is being staged at the wonderful new Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre. We have decided to showcase our sector at this venue as it gives visitors who are interested in a career in our growing sector an appreciation of what it would be like to work within our factories and to blow away the myths of dirty and noisy sweat shops. Most manufacturers on the Island will be exhibiting and will be able to discuss their current vacancies.
‘The AMTC also gives students an insight into the training facilities being offered when they enrol on engineering courses, especially the Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering Course, which is a modern take on the traditional engineering apprenticeship specifically targeted at the aerospace, precision engineering and high-tech sectors in the Isle of Man.
‘Manufacturing businesses have committed to recruit their future apprentices directly from this course so if anyone is interested in an apprenticeship with some of the Island’s most exciting manufacturers then this course is for you.’
