The success of staff and volunteers in recent awards is testament to the dedication of the entire Youth Service. That is the view of
Ken Callister, Principal Youth Officer, who congratulated recipients of Isle of Man Newspapers’ Awards for Excellence and Pride in Mann awards and Manx Radio’s Dream Catcher Appeal Heroes in the Community Awards.
Part of the Department of Education and Children, the Youth Service runs more than 100 sessions a week and works with more than 2,500 children and young people.
It relies on more than 120 dedicated part-time staff and volunteers who give up evenings and weekends to deliver projects and clubs to eight to 21-year-olds – often in addition to having demanding full-time jobs.
The
Families and Schools Together (FAST) project, run jointly with Save the Children and piloted at Willaston Primary School, won the Tynwald Mills Award for Teamwork in the Awards for Excellence. The pioneering project has been extended to other schools.
Meanwhile, Val Goldie, who runs Peel Youth Club, was awarded the Spirt of Youth/Schools award in the Pride in Mann awards.
Georgia Cooper, who works for the young bands’ project Soundcheck, was recognised for Dedication to the Arts (Under 18) in the Heroes in the Community awards while, at the same ceremony, Beth Brown won one of four Child of Courage accolades. Beth volunteers as a dance teacher/mentor at the Youth Arts Centre.
Ken Callister, Principal Youth Officer, said:
‘These prestigious awards recognise the commitment and contribution of staff, volunteers and young people and reflect on the whole of the service.‘It is fantastic that people in our community who make the Isle of Man the great place it is receive such recognition. ‘I would like to thank the organisations that stage and supported these awards, which are a true celebration of our great community spirit in the Isle of Man.’Photo - Val Goldie (left), Youth Worker in Charge, Peel Youth Club – Pride in Mann award for Spirt of Youth/Schools; Peter Corrin (second left), Assistant Youth Worker, and Jane Leece (second right), Youth Worker in Charge, Willaston Youth Club/Families and Schools Together – Tynwald Mills Award for Teamwork, Awards for Excellence; Georgia Cooper (centre), Assistant Youth Worker for Soundcheck – Dedication to the Arts, Heroes in the Community Awards; Beth Brown, Heroes in the Community Awards, Child of Courage.
