Legislation phased in from Monday

The Freedom of Information Act will lead to a more open, transparent government, according to an expert.

The new legislation - which will see public officials held more accountable by the public - begins its phased introduction on Monday (Feb 1).

Only the Cabinet Office and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture will be subject to initial requests.

A timetable bringing in other departments, public bodies and local authorities runs into 2018.
