Gemma Cowell died after an overdose of prescription drugs

A narrative verdict has been recorded at an inquest into the death of a Douglas woman, who died after an overdose of prescription drugs.

Thirty-four-year-old Gemma Cowell was found by her husband at their home on Clypse Road, in Willaston in May last year (2015).

Coroner of Inquests John Needham announced the verdict at Douglas Courthouse today (Thurs 25 Feb).

Mrs Cowell’s husband, Lee described his late wife and mother of four, as a ‘great mum’.

He explained how she had suffered from severe back pain and anxiety for years, and was on various prescription drugs to combat the pain and to treat insomnia.

On the morning of May 24, Mr Cowell noticed something was wrong and raised the alarm.

However, when the police arrived they were unable to carry out any CPR.

Mrs Cowell's toxicology results showed a high level of parecetemol and sleeping tablets in her system.

The inquest also revealed Mrs Cowell had overdosed on medication in the past, and had a turbulent home life.

Coroner of inquests Mr Needham came to a narrative verdict, unable to ascertain whether Mrs Cowell intended to take her own life, or whether her actions were simply a cry for help.

He concluded proceedings by passing on his condolences to Mrs Cowell's family and friends.
