Sport Relief 2016: miles of fundraising opportunities

by isleofman.com 29th February 2016
This year’s Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is on Sunday March 20, the event’s organiser, Douglas town centre management, has confirmed.

Douglas promenade will be the setting for one of more than 450 Sport Relief Mile events taking place that weekend across the British Isles aimed at raising funds to transform people’s lives in the UK and funding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Town centre manager Michelle O’Malley said: ‘You can choose to stroll, walk, jog, run or devise your own unique way of covering one, three or six miles along the promenade. And for those who want to stand out from the crowd, they can always ditch the “lycra and trainers look” and go for more of a style statement or opt for fancy dress to add to the fun.

‘144 people have already registered, Robinson’s have kindly donated fruit to give entrants an energy boost and everyone who takes part receives a medal for their efforts.

‘This is a great community event with the power to make a very real difference to people’s lives, so we’re urging everyone to get active, sign up and step out for a great cause. You’ll feel good…and you’ll be doing good.’

Registration will be in the vicinity of the Bottleneck car park from 2pm. The one-mile start is at 2.30pm, the three and six-mile starts at 3pm.

The start and finish line is by the Bottleneck car park and the course involves covering lengths of the promenade until the chosen distance is completed.

The one mile turning point will be near the Empress Hotel and for three and six miles in the vicinity of the Strathallan terminus.

Entry is ?7 for adults, ?3 for under-16s and ?17 for families of four (two adults plus two under-16s).
