Most of us now know that Fairtrade is about helping producers in developing countries; but many still think that it’s just another way of giving to charity ....... Not so! This Fairtrade Fortnight St James Dalby have a free Film screening of the period drama “Amazing Grace” telling the true story the idealist William Wilberforce in the late 18th century as he manoeuvres his way through Parliament, in his battle to try to end the British transatlantic slave trade.
The film is a historic drama in its own right, but also acts as a catalyst for some of those bigger issues raised by the Fairtrade movement today:
The cost of exploitation against cheap prices; the individual’s right to challenge the status quo: the moral and ethical voice of the church; the impact of the trade union movement on working conditions and wages in our own society......
The film screening is on Friday 4th March starting at 7.30pm. There is no admission charge, but donations to help cover costs are always welcomed. Fairtrade refreshments and home- cooking “Fairtrade style” will be served, and the Dalby Fairtrade Shop selling a wide range of Traidcraft Fairtrade products will be open as usual.
Come and learn more about how this movement that changed the world over 200 hundred years ago, is still working to bring about justice today, and how you can become part of it!
