Jury inquiry hears advocates' evidence

by isleofman.com 4th March 2016

Issues such as social media and jury size discussed

A Tynwald Select Committee investigating the Island's jury system sat again this morning (Fri).

Experienced advocates Jason Stanley, Vicki Unsworth and Dawn Jones presented evidence to the panel on a range of issues.

Among the issues discussed were the impact of social media, jury size, the risk of bias and members' ability to make neutral decisions in emotive cases.

It's the third time the Committee has sat this year.

Previous witnesses have included acting Attorney General John Quinn and Deemster Alistair Montgomerie.

It was formed last year after Douglas East MHK Chris Robertshaw raised concerns about the effectiveness of the contemporary jury system.
