EU says Island TB free

Island herd closely scrutinised

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has revealed the EU Commission has declared the Island tuberculosis-free.

It follows years of rigorous scrutiny surrounding the Island's cattle herd - the average cost of dealing with an outbreak on a farm is estimated at ?34,000.

Prior to an outbreak in 2001, cows on the Island were TB-free for 30 years.

Chief Veterinary Officer Stuart Jacques says it's welcome news for all:
